GSR and ACU Staff & Volunteers Spend Fall Break Helping Others in Bastrop
By Shannon Wallis

**—Scroll down to bottom of article to view short video clip of GSR & ACU staff/student volunteers cleaning at a work site—**

The air still smelled a little smoky in certain parts of Bastrop, Texas the weekend of October 21st. Global Samaritan staff and volunteers/ACU students left Abilene early that Friday morning, eager to get their hands dirty helping others. Nineteen of us arrived at lunchtime and were greeted with smiles, hugs and lunch by the volunteers and members of the Bastrop Church of Christ and the Church of Christ Disaster Relief Team.

After lunch, we tackled the problem taking up the church’s kitchen/fellowship hall: boxes upon boxes full of clothing, shoes, linens, etc., stood chest high. People had been generous, but with all the people the church was helping, they had fallen behind in sorting. The church volunteers believed we could spend the whole weekend sorting through everything, but a few hours later, everything was done. Several of our volunteers also spent time working one-on-one with victims of the wildfire as they came through the church, collecting items they needed for their families. That night, we slept in the church auditorium on sleeping bags and cots.

On Saturday, the majority of us mounted up in the van and headed out to the work sites, donning work boots, jeans and special dust masks. We worked the day away at three different sites, sifting through rubble and shoveling ash. Remnants of bed springs and furniture were pulled out in to special piles. Any belongings found intact, such as dishes, figurines, etc., were taken back to the church for the families to keep. Precious few were found, Bastrop COC members reported that the fires burned so hot, than even fire-proof safes melted, the only remaining items inside were the stock and barrels of the guns. Shoveling all day was tiring, but we spent the night in fellowship with each other; some men crowded around the Rangers game, others talking or watching kids movies the church had.

The next morning after breakfast, we attended services at the Bastrop COC. During class time, we as a group headed outside and spent time sharing our thoughts about the trip. Many students confessed to being surprised by how they felt after working the weekend away and interacting with residents of Bastrop who has lost everything. For over half of the ACU volunteers, this was their first relief trip. We warned them that relief work was fulfilling, but addicting. Once it got in their blood, it could become habit!

After services and lunch, we said goodbye to the fast friends we made in Bastrop and returned safely to Abilene, tired but happy, weary yet fulfilled by the work we had done.

GSR to Send Aid to Somali Refugees
By Shannon Wallis

In what many are referring to as the worst drought in decades, tens of thousands Somalis are fleeing to Kenya in hopes that they will find relief, food and water for their families. One official with the U.S. government aid branch, Nancy Lindborg, reported to Washington on August 3rd that the U.S. estimated that more than 29,000 children under five years of age have perished over last 90 days in Somalia. One camp in Dadaab, Kenya, was originally constructed to house 90,000 refugees. Currently, there are over 400,000 men, women and children living there with more arriving each day.

Global Samaritan Resources, Inc. is currently collecting funds to send a 20’ container of food to refugee camps in Somalia to be distributed via ministry partners, as well as additional funds and aid to purchase supplies within Kenya. Right now the most significant shortages are the lack of food, water and shelter.

If possible, we ask that you make a donation to our Global Samaritan Somalia fund by using the PayPal link below, or by mailing a donation to PO BOX 3431, Abilene, TX 79604. No amount is too little or great, and every bit will help us bring relief to those who need it most.

The video below is just a snapshot of what the refugees – and especially the children – are dealing with every day.

GSR Responding to Tornado Disaster
By Robert Blasingame

After one of the worst disasters caused by tornadoes in history, Alabama and the surrounding states have been reeling. Since that time GSR has been receiving a steady stream of calls and personal visits. People in the Abilene community know Global Samaritan as a ministry that helps hurting people and so they’re contacting us because they want to help.

If you are interested in helping please send financial donations to Global Samaritan Resources, PO Box 3431, Abilene, TX 79604. GSR is also accepting donations of supplies. They need toothpaste, large bottles of shampoo which are then poured into smaller 4 oz bottles, toothbrushes, bars of Dial Soap or any antibacterial soap, wash cloths and gallon-sized clear zipper-type bags.

If you are interested in donating any of these supplies, which are then made into hygiene kits, drive through the gates at Global Samaritan Resources and place the items in the donation boxes. Donation boxes are available to accept supplies Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM – Noon and 1:00 – 4:30 PM.

Water for Haiti, Honduras, and Wherever There is a Need
By Larry Musick

If I may, I’d like to share just one way I’ve seen the faithfulness of our Father this week.  A couple of weeks ago a local university student came by my office.  She shared that she was part of a group of students who collect money for water projects in other countries.  She asked if they could partner with Global Samaritan Resources on a project.  Our conversation turned to a water purification device we have that uses a car battery, a small solar panel and common table salt to purify diseased water and make it clean and life-sustaining.  We talked and she had exactly $2500 to offer.  Interestingly, this is the cost for GSR to purchase the water purification system.

This week she returned to my office and said the group had decided they wanted to work with us to bring pure water to a group of needy people somewhere in the world.  I thanked her and told her of a group leaving for Haiti that needed funding for another unit.  She smiled and said, “We’ve been praying for the opportunity to help in Haiti.”  God is good!  The picture below shows Jada Yarbrough (left) and Ben Gray (right) and me in the GSR warehouse.  We are standing in front of the water purification unit we use to train teams in how to install the equipment in multiple locations around the world.  Interesting fact: GSR in Abilene, Texas is one of only two locations in the world where people are trained on how to use this amazing equipment.

The video above is of Ben giving Jada an overview of how the water purification unit works
